An interview with Cyber PATH student Eli Bowen

Cyber PATH exists to benefit the next generation of Cyber professionals. Discover how Cyber PATH has helped one of our students, Eli Bowen.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am currently in my second year of studying Computer Science with Cyber Security at Plymouth University. I’ve long had an interest in computing, having first learnt to code in Python and C#, then moved on to learning about networks and understanding them inside out. I believe this is crucial as a foundational aspect of cyber security from a technical perspective. Without a deep understanding of network routing and communication protocols, it’s difficult to grasp the risks within a system.

What excites you about “cyber”?

The breadth of topics. We cover networking, software development, penetration testing, and beyond. Its scope is virtually limitless, offering dynamic and fast-paced opportunities, including AI, which is expanding daily. I also find satisfaction in uncovering vulnerabilities, addressing them effectively, and contributing to systems’ resilience, knowing that you’ve enhanced their robustness and security posture.

Tell me about you and Cyber PATH.

I joined Cyber PATH in June 2023 and have been on it for almost a year. It has been brilliant. I applied because I wanted a way to build on my knowledge outside of my studies. I’ve been using Kali Linux for several years and wanted to be able to apply those skills to real-world applications.

Has the programme been what you expected so far?

No, it has exceeded my expectations. I didn’t expect that it would be so comprehensive in what we’d be covering or so hands-on with practical application in supporting clients. This is shown through giving security awareness training to people who don’t have such a wide knowledge of cyber.

What services have you been involved in delivering?

I have delivered Internet discovery, internal vulnerability assessments, First Step Web Assessments, and security awareness sessions.

How has Cyber PATH helped you?

Delivering security awareness training has built my confidence considerably. I never thought I’d feel comfortable delivering training on that scale. Cyber Path has also developed my soft skills, particularly in talking through technical aspects of Cyber with non-technical people.

Would you have ever considered delivering a SAT or Internet Discovery without Cyber PATH?

Actually, this was the first time I had considered this kind of service offering.

Have you seen your work helping businesses?

Absolutely!

After delivering an SAT to clients, they described it as a ‘huge eye-opener’. I felt that I was able to deliver great service and answer all their questions. It’s great to be able to connect with the clients and feel that you’ve added value.

What would you say to another student who is thinking of applying?

Go for it, apply! If you think you’d enjoy cyber and want to obtain practical experience, then you have nothing to lose. It’s been a great experience, and the support from my supervisors has been amazing; whenever I have questions, they are approachable and able to impart insightful guidance.
